You’ve got the Instagram feed, the killer service, and the dream clients you’re ready to book. But for some reason… inquiries aren’t coming in. Before you blame the algorithm, it’s time to take a hard look at your website.
I know this might sting a little, but as a designer, I’ve seen it happen more times than I can count: a website that’s actually scaring away potential clients. The good news? Once you know the signs, you can fix them.
Here are five big red flags that your website might be costing you clients — and how to turn things around.
1. Your Navigation Feels Like a Maze
If visitors have to click around five times just to figure out what you do, they’re gone. A confusing or overloaded navigation bar is one of the fastest ways to lose potential clients.
Fix it: Simplify. Stick to 4–6 main menu items (Home, About, Services/Shop, Blog, Contact). Keep dropdowns minimal, and make sure the path to your main offer is obvious.
💡 Want to test your site’s usability? Ask a friend to find your contact page in under 10 seconds. If they can’t, you’ve got some editing to do.
2. Your Site Loads Too Slowly
Here’s the harsh truth: people won’t wait for your site to load. If it takes more than a few seconds, they’ll click away — and possibly head to a competitor.
Fix it:
- Compress images with TinyPNG or ShortPixel.
- Remove unnecessary plugins or widgets.
- Host videos on YouTube or Vimeo instead of uploading directly.
Test your site with Google PageSpeed Insights to see exactly what’s slowing it down.
3. Your Messaging Isn’t Clear
If your homepage doesn’t answer “what do you do, who do you serve, and how can I work with you” within seconds, you’re losing clients. Confusing copy is one of the biggest conversion killers.
Fix it:
- Write a clear headline that explains what you do.
- Use subheadings to break down services.
- Keep your language customer-focused (less “I” and more “you”).
💡 Not a copywriter? Try running your text through Hemingway Editor to simplify and clarify your words.

4. You’re Missing Social Proof
If your site doesn’t show testimonials, reviews, or examples of your work, potential clients may not trust you enough to book.
Fix it:
- Add testimonials from happy clients (even one or two makes a big difference).
- Include logos of brands/publications you’ve worked with.
- Share a small portfolio of your best work.
Pro tip: If you don’t have testimonials yet, ask a friend or collaborator to write a character-based review — something like “Amanda is reliable, creative, and a joy to work with.” Trust signals matter.
5. You Don’t Have a Clear Call-to-Action
Even if your site looks gorgeous, without a clear next step, visitors won’t take action. I’ve seen sites that wow visually but leave people asking, “Okay… now what?”
Fix it:
- Choose ONE main call-to-action (Book Now, Inquire Here, Shop the Collection).
- Place it multiple times throughout your site.
- Make sure your buttons stand out (use your boldest brand color here).
💡 Test your CTAs by asking: if I only skimmed this page, would I know what to do next?

Each template is professionally designed with:
- Clean, user-friendly navigation.

Final Thoughts
Your website is often the first impression someone has of your business — and first impressions matter. Don’t let slow load times, confusing copy, or weak calls-to-action cost you clients you’ve worked so hard to attract.
With a little intentional tweaking (or a fresh start with a template), your site can go from holding you back to booking dream clients on repeat.
